A Tennessee orthopedists office was raided Wednesday after a patient died from complications from a spinal fusion.
The Tennessean reports that Dr. Brian Smith was arrested at the Knoxville Orthopedic Clinic and the Knox County Detention Center on two counts of misdemeanor counts of abusing his own patients.
Smith allegedly had the patients treated at his office for months without consulting them about complications.
According to police, Smith was on a phone call with another patient on Wednesday when the phone rang and someone on the other end said Smith was “sick.”
Smith allegedly said “yes” and hung up.
According to police reports, the patient was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital.
He is survived by a 6-year-old daughter.
Smith, who was fired from his position as an orthopedian and the CEO of Rockhill Orthopedics in July, has not responded to requests for comment.
