An orthopedist has come up with a simple solution to avoid injuring your body while working out: Use an ergonomic shoe.
The technique involves wrapping a rubber band around your ankle and a small elastic band around the ankle that you can wrap around your leg to give you extra flexibility.
You can even put your shoes on your thighs and lower back.
In a study published in the International Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness, Dr Sharmila Prakash, a clinical fellow at University of Liverpool, and colleagues found that using the elastic band as an orthotic device, rather than a crutch, was much more effective than a strap.
“Using a flexible band, a knee injury would be much more likely,” Dr Prakast said.
“The band can be wrapped around the foot, which helps in supporting the foot.
It’s not like you have to wrap it around your body.”
She said this was a way of “simplifying” the process of working out, and “giving you the freedom to go to the gym or run without worrying about injury”.
“I find that it is easier to work out while wearing an orthosis than when you’re wearing a crutches.
It is like an extra band,” she said.
But why would you want to put your foot on an elastic band?
The elastic band is not designed to give a perfect fit for your foot.
“A lot of people who wear an ortho strap, when they come out of the gym they wear a piece of elastic around the knee, which is very painful,” Dr Ramesh Kumar, professor of orthopedists at The Ohio State University, told news.com.au.
“That elastic band, when it is worn, is also very uncomfortable, and it is not really designed to be a crumple zone.”
It is designed to help you feel secure when you are working out.
“The team designed an experiment to test the effectiveness of the band and found that it was effective at reducing knee pain and reducing the likelihood of injury.
The band was effective in reducing pain and increasing flexibility and the team also found that the band reduced muscle soreness.”
We found that when we put a band around our ankle, that we felt the elasticity of the ankle increase, which increased the range of motion of the knee,” Dr Kumar said.
Dr Kumar said that the elastic bands would be helpful for athletes who were unable to get out of their gym shoes.”
There is a lot of orthotics around, so it is hard for an athlete to be able to get their shoes off,” he said.
The researchers also found a benefit in the use of the elastic as a crumpled-up band to wrap around the body, allowing the wearer to wear their shoes as a protective barrier.
Dr Prakas method could also help people with orthopedically debilitating injuries like fibromyalgia or post-traumatic stress disorder.”
I think it could also be a potential way to reduce the incidence of the joint injury,” Dr Prasad said.
